December 1, 2008

Time flies, but it may have more to do with getting older than with the amount of fun  we're having.  This year was not nearly as productive as last year, unfortunately.  An injury to the rotator cuff in my right shoulder was diagnosed at the time I was making arrangements for our summer programming which caused me to scale back our plans pending a determination about the need for surgery.  By the time it was determined that I would forgo surgery, it was too late to add sessions to the schedule.

We continued our tradition of providing paddling experiences for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of WNC in June.  Five Big Brothers/Big sisters and their 'littles' participated in the sessions at Lake Julian.  Two of the big/little pairs made it for the trip on the French Broad River through the Biltmore Estate.

We had a session with the Boys and Girls Club of Asheville scheduled for late July.  However, they had problems with their transportation and had to cancel at the last moment.  We look forward to working with them again next year.

The total number of youths served this year was down to five due to injury and cancellation issues.  We also had five adults who participated.  Two new volunteers joined us this year and a third was ready to run the river with us in July if our session had materialized as planned.  We look forward to a full schedule for next year.

Thank you for your interest and support.
