August 12, 2007 This update comes a bit late in the season as we are finished with our events and I have headed back to work. The year started off with an appreciation dinner on March 24th for our volunteers from 2006. The dinner was catered at no charge by Salsa's Restaurant of Asheville. Sam's Club also donated a gift card which was used to purchase drinks and dessert. We had about 15 volunteers and their guests in attendance. Our first event this year was a Quick Start Your Canoe clinic for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of WNC on April 28th. Twelve Big Brothers/Big Sisters and their 'littles' attended this session at Lake Julian. A second event with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program was held in June. This clinic combined the ACA Introduction to Canoe, Essentials of Canoe and Moving Water Canoe courses which culminated in a trip down the French Broad River past the Biltmore Estate. Three adults and three youths participated in this event. July brought two more events. Both were combined courses similar to the June event just mentioned. Nine youths and two adults from the Stephens-Lee Center of the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department participated in the first clinic. Five of those youths and both adults made it to the river trip. Ten youths and two adults from the Boys and Girls Club of Asheville participated in the second clinic and four youths and both adults made it to the river. The total number of youths served by Wolf Creek Adventures this year is 32. Seventeen adults also participated, most of those coming from the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. A total of twelve youths made it to the river which constitutes our best year yet. In addition, five volunteers gave their time to help with instruction at Lake Julian and safety on the river trip. Some of those volunteers attended more than one session. Thank you for your interest and support. |
