It's been a busy summer.  Hard to believe it's over.  We had our five Essentials of River Canoeing events as scheduled.  Twenty-five youths attended the events along with a number of adults from the different agencies which included Crossroads, the Boys and Girls Club of Asheville, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Asheville and Hendersonville, the YWCA, and the Asheville Parks and Recreation's Stephens-Lee Center.  We were able to take three river trips this summer and nine volunteers helped with the instruction at Lake Julian and with safety on the French Broad River.  We also held an Introduction to River Safety and Rescue clinic on September 9, 2006 which was attended by three youths and taught by Ruth Albright, a volunteer ACA Swift Water Rescue Instructor.  An article in the September 4th edition of the Asheville-Citizen Times preceded this event and gave us some good publicity.  A few photos from the safety clinic and a couple of our lake sessions have been posted in the photos section for this year.

We're ready to hit the water this week.  There are five Essentials of River Canoeing events lined up for June and July.  Check out Schedule 2006 for details on the dates, times and agencies involved.  Volunteer training in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR was conducted this weekend and we are well covered with Swift Water Rescue Training and ACA Certified Canoe Instructors.  Water levels are looking good right now.  Let's hope we continue to get moderate amounts of rain so the French Broad will continue to be a good option for our river trips.

Great news!  The National Safe Boating Council has awarded Wolf Creek Adventures a Local RBS Grant for $1,000.  This money will be used to upgrade our PFD's and helmets to Class III Whitewater standards.  We will also purchase some rescue equipment which will include rescue throw bags plus some carabiners and line if there is money left over.

Looks like the next few months are going to be busy ones for Wolf Creek Adventures.  In addition to working with the YWCA, we are raffling off two pair of NOC Fun Passes.  One pair is for the Ocoee River and the other pair is for the Nantahala River.  We are scheduled to attend a number of festivals including Spring Splash!, the Mountain Outdoor Sports Festival in Asheville, NC, the French Broad River Festival in Hot Springs, NC and the Heff Fest in Erwin, TN.  We will also be down at the Nantahala for a couple of slalom races over the next few weeks.  Click on Raffle to see more details.

We already have three agencies on board for our Essentials of River Canoeing events in June and July.  We will be working with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Asheville and the Boys and Girls Club of Asheville again this summer.  The YWCA will be joining us for the first time this year.  Hopefully, we will have better success with river levels this go around.  The way it looks right now, we may end up dealing with too little water instead of too much like we did last year.  Time will tell.  You can go to Schedule 2006 to see more details about the schedule for these events.

February 12, 2006

2006 has gotten off to a busy start.  We are currently working with teenagers at the Asheville YWCA on Friday afternoons after school.  We are using two Cascade C-1's that were donated to us last summer.  The pool at the YWCA is a bit small, so we are limited to working with two youths at a time.  We have the pool for the rest of the winter and into the spring, so we should be able to give a good number of kids an introduction to canoe strokes and technique before the weather warms up and we can get out on Lake Julian.

A grant has been submitted to the National Safe Boating Council.  We have requested $1,000 to upgrade our PFD's and helmets to equipment suitable for Class III rapids.  These will be used during our river trips in August and September.  We also plan to purchase several throw ropes for use in our safety clinic that will be held in August.  The grants will be awarded sometime after March 1st.

The NOC has graciously donated four Fun Passes that we will use for fund raising this spring.  Two passes are for the Nantahala River and two passes are for the Ocoee River.  There are some restrictions that apply.  You can click on Raffle for more information about the passes and how to enter.  We will be manning a booth at NRC races this spring as well as attending festivals in the Western North Carolina area.  The drawing will be held on Memorial Day and the winning ticket numbers will be posted on this web site.  Winners will be notified by mail.
